Karaoke Game Switch

For gamers who love to sing, the Nintendo Switch is a platform that delivers plenty of options. With its built-in microphone and a dedicated app that supports USB mics, the Switch can host karaoke games with a little bit of planning and setup.

Ravenscourt and Voxler have reissued last year’s Let’s Sing 2023 to bring it up to speed for the Switch, featuring a 30 song roster that includes current hits from a wide range of genres as well as older classics such as David Bowie’s Life on Mars? and K-Pop sensation BTS’ Dynamite. Players can compete in the game’s various modes solo or with friends, either locally or online.

The game’s ‘Legend’ mode has you battle it out with an AI-controlled opponent, while ‘Feat.’ lets you duet with a partner and discover your compatibility based on pitch and timing. ‘Mixtape 2.0’ mixes songs into a medley and keeps things fresh, while ‘World Contest’ offers ranked online karaoke-offs against others. Finally, ‘Let’s Party’ is a local team-based competitive challenge mode for up to eight players.

Of course, it’s also possible to just kick back and use the built-in jukebox mode to listen to all of the available tracks. The microphone that comes with the game does a decent job of amplifying your voice while still letting you know whether you’ve hit the right notes. Unfortunately, it doesn’t amplify the volume of the music, which can get a bit distracting when trying to sing along with the track.

Besides the existing titles, there’s no shortage of new karaoke games coming to the Switch in the near future. Two of the most notable are Singstar and Karaoke JOYSOUND. The former is the more expensive of the two and comes with a dedicated microphone, while the latter features an in-game app that can work with any USB mic on your phone or computer.

Both of these titles will be able to run on the Switch’s high-definition TV mode when docked and connected to a home theater system. Both will be able to support up to four singers using the built-in microphones or external USB mics and can be played in single or multiplayer mode. Unlike the other two karaoke games, the Singstar and Karaoke JOYSOUND microphones don’t actually amplify your voice, but instead rely on audio recognition to tell you whether or not you’ve hit the mark with each note. The microphones are designed to be easy to set up and use, but the lack of an amplification feature may be a deal breaker for many. Still, the ability to play on-the-go and with a variety of different modes makes this a worthwhile purchase for fans of karaoke.
