If you’ve ever gone out on a winter date, sat through a Christmas-themed episode of Glee, or waited in line at a Cheesecake Factory during the holiday season, chances are you’ve heard a version of “Jingle Bells.” The song is relentlessly catchy, easy to remember, and, as many have pointed out, ripe for parody. That said, there are also a handful of truly great renditions.
Frank Sinatra’s 1948 recording from his album Christmas Songs revolutionized the song a bit, adding choir vocals and spelling out the word jingle (how did Gwen Stefani resist?). Other classics include Ella Fitzgerald’s 1960 version from her album Christmas Carousel, which is best enjoyed while sitting on a chaise longue smoking a skinny cigarette and sipping a dirty martini. And, of course, there’s Kris Jenner’s 2021 version, which is as cringeworthy as it gets. But, in her defense, she didn’t try to elevate it; she was just a momager and MasterClass instructor having a little fun.
