BREWER, Maine (KFVS) — There’s nothing quite like a good karaoke night with friends but for many people who are staying at home for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic that’s simply not possible. A man from Brewer has come up with a way to bring a little joy to those who are socially distanced during quarantine. Joseph Meyers started the Quarantine Karaoke Facebook group which encourages people to post videos of themselves singing their favorite songs.
It was a simple idea that sprung up out of necessity. A day or so into the stay-at-home orders in his area last March, Meyers was sitting at home feeling a bit down. So he went into his basement, turned on a backing track, and recorded himself singing “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd. Meyers posted it on Facebook to share with his friends, and it was a hit.
Since then the group has exploded, with thousands of members uploading videos all throughout the day from around the world. From kids and teens to seniors and adults, there’s a little bit of everything in the groups page feed. There are duets, costumes, dancing and even the occasional sign language rendition of some of the more popular songs.
The group has a few rules, including a requirement that you keep your performances positive and fun. There are also a few things that aren’t allowed, including posting inappropriate videos or criticizing others for the way they sing. And that’s what Meyers and the rest of the page administrators are working to address as the group continues to grow. There is a new video posted to the page every hour, from people who live in as far a flung places as the Philippines and China.
