Karaoke is a type of entertainment where people sing along to recorded music using a microphone. A karaoke machine provides instrumental’stems’ of songs and displays the lyrics on a screen for participants to follow, often including the ability to adjust the volume and pitch of the soundtrack. A number of companies have developed software to host karaoke shows and allow singers to interact over the Internet. In recent years, the popularity of karaoke has grown, with several television channels devoted to the show. It has also become a popular feature on many personal computers, allowing users to connect to the Internet and download karaoke files from the Web.

The history of karaoke can be traced to the postwar period in Japan, where clubs and bars were common places for salarymen to unwind and socialize. These establishments provided a variety of entertainment, including live singing by amateurs and professionals. In 1971, nightclub musician Daisuke Inoue independently invented a karaoke machine in Kobe, Japan. His greatest contribution was understanding the difficulty amateurs had in singing pop songs and recording his own versions of popular music in keys that were easier for casual singers to handle.

In the mid-2000s, karaoke machines saw a shift toward hard drive devices that allowed a large library of songs to be stored, and touch screen technology that enabled guests to select their desired song with ease. These innovations were made possible by the declining cost of hard drives and improvements in touchscreen technology. Newer karaoke systems can play MIDI files, which include the music and the lyrics, on a computer screen. The files can also be burned onto a CD, allowing singers to use their own favorite instruments and sing without the accompaniment of a live band or disco lights.

In July 2023, the YouTube channel Sing King Karaoke reached 11 million subscribers, making it the largest karaoke channel on the site. Rita Shukron starred as the character Tova in Karaoke, portraying a woman who embraces new experiences and changes in her life.
